A horizontal band saw is usually used for cutting large pieces of wood or metal. It works differently than the standard vertical band saw: instead of moving your workpiece into the blade, the reverse is true: You typically clamp the work piece in place and then the blade descends through the workpiece as it is cut. Usually the blade is simply anchored on one side and is driven downwards through your piece by gravity! In the case of a metal horizontal band saw, it will usually have a sprayer and pump to make sure that the workpiece is covered in a cutting fluid which is recirculated throughout the saw.
Without this cutting fluid, the piece can overhead and cutting it will be much less efficient. Like all bandsaws, this saw uses a continuous circle of metal with a blade or grinding agent on one of the edges. This circular blade is spun quickly by an electrical motor in order to efficiently cut through wood or metal. This is a foundational tool in many workshops. Keep in mind that they are generally used for cutting stock generally down to size and that precise finishing cuts are made on more precise equipment.

When buying your own saw, you can find one new or look around to find one used. When buying one pre-owned, it's a good idea to buy one in good running condition so that you don't need to put more money into maintenance. When buying it, be sure to watch it run and understand any quirks it may have from the current owner. If they have any extra blades, try to get these thrown in for free as they are expensive to buy and this can make the used deal even better for you.
