The Ridgid Band Saw Combines Precision Cutting With Noise Reduction Qualities

Tired of that noisy old band saw in your workshop? Maybe it's time for you to get a smooth running and quiet Ridgid band saw.

Saw Band

That screaming old band saw of yours may not just irritate you, but it may also have some serious repercussions. This is no joke. Too much noise while working in your workshop might not be good for your health.

Saw Band

According to many scientific studies, noise pollution can cause a lack of sleep, irritability, indigestion, heartburn, and high blood pressure. If you are tired of that annoying noise that your old band saw is making, maybe it is high time for you to consider purchasing a new saw, and one that does not make so much noise.

One of the most smooth running and quiet saws on the market today is Ridgid band saw. It has a ¾ HP TEFC induction motor that is built to exude minimal noise. The Ridgid saw is the perfect choice for those who want to work without too much noise.

Other Benefits of the Ridgid Band Saw

Heavy and Durable Construction:

The Ridgid saw may not be large compared to other band saws, but its construction is simply amazing. Just consider its table. Some band saws have aluminum alloy tables. Manufactures who equip their saws with aluminum alloy tables say that their product will last a long time. That promise and the fact that they put a relatively low price on their saws fools many people into thinking this product will last a long time. Aluminum may handle heavy-duty work for quite some time, but it will not last long.

When it comes to band saw table material, cast iron is still the best. Tough and durable, a cast iron table will handle heavy work pieces for many years. Ridgid knows that fact. The Ridgid band saw is equipped with an extremely durable cast iron table that will withstand heavy work for a long time.

The Ridgid band saw is also equipped with a cast iron frame. With that type of frame, you can expect that your saw will not easily get damaged. The motor and other sensitive materials will remain safe from the elements from the sturdy cast iron frame.

Supreme Precision:

Woodworkers in the old days complain that they unintentionally make wrong cuts due to the machine's uncontrollable vibration. That problem cannot happen with a Ridgid saw. Its heavy-duty construction and frame is not only designed to protect the machine, but also helps to minimize vibrations that may cause erroneous cuts. Aside from that, the Ridgid band saw also has blade guides that can be adjusted to ensure precise cuts are made.

Dust Collection System:

Working with a band saw can be fun. What most owners do not want is the mess that accumulates in the workshop once work is over. You cut wood all day and your workshop will get dusty. That is a problem that many makers of these kinds of saws have not addressed.

Fortunately, you will not go through with this problem with a Ridgid band saw. Ridgid designers and engineers know that cleanliness is very important in every workshop. So they equipped their saws with a built-in dust collection port to help maintain cleanliness in the workshop.

Very User Friendly:

A machine is designed to make work easier. The Ridgid band saw lives up to that expectation. It has soft-touch knobs so that users can make adjustments easier. It also features very visible indicators.

Choosing a Band Saw

his month's "how to buy" topic is band saws. Depending on what kind of woodworking you normally do, band saws can be essential to the shop or a perfect accessory to the table saw.

Saw Band

There are two common styles of band saws, the three wheel and the two wheel. After this it is mainly a matter of size. Three wheel band saws give you a greater throat depth than a two wheel having the same blade length but they have other problems, which take away from any cutting advantage. Two wheels are much easier to align properly and keep aligned during use than three. The thinner blades also will break much easier with three wheels because of the extra stress created by smaller wheels. All in all, there are very few three wheel band saws, which are worth the money and hassle they create. There was a time when there were many on the market, but these days they are rare except at garage sales. If you need the extra throat depth then buy a larger two wheel machine. Just as an example, years ago I was using a three wheel band saw and it took me almost half an hour to get the blade to track properly only to find when I put it under load the tracking went off again. From here on I'm only going to talk about the two wheel band saws.

Saw Band

The frame construction is the first thing to look at. Smaller bench top band saws can be pressed metal, plastic resin, steel or cast iron. Larger band saws will be either cast iron or steel. The pressed metal and plastic resin are not as rigid as steel or cast and these saws are definitely meant for light duty hobby and craft work. You are much better off to get one that has a steel or cast iron frame. They will last longer, run smoother and the blades will track better. Larger band saws all come with cast iron or steel frames so you do not have to worry about the rigidity. Each type of frame has its advantages and disadvantages. Steel frames are the most rigid and therefore more stable and smoother running, but they are also more expensive. Cast iron frames are cheaper and often allow you to increase the height capacity using a riser, but having cast parts they can crack and fracture through use. In most home shop applications this is not a large issue but it depends on the amount of use.

Motor size can range from 1/6HP to 1/3HP for bench top and from 1/2HP upward to 3HP or larger on big industrial machines. The smaller the motor the harder it has to work. If you mainly work on smaller crafts or model construction, the smaller bench tops are fine, but in the long run try and go with one, which has 1/4HP or larger. If you build furniture, cabinets or larger projects go with a floor model with at least a 3/4HP motor. The 1/2HP models just don't have enough power for heavier cutting. If you want to cut metal, then make sure the machine has slower speeds, down to less than 200 rpm instead of the approximate 3000 rpm for woodcutting.

Make sure the table tilt and adjustment works smoothly and does not bind anywhere. Tilt it to the full 45 degrees and look underneath to make sure nothing is interfering with the blade. If the saw does not come with a fence, see if the table to drilled and or tapped for a fence rail. The quality of band saw fences is wide, so have a good look at it. If you really like the saw but the fence is garbage all is not lost. If nothing can be done with the existing one you can make your own which can be just as stable and accurate as anything available. The average table size is about 143 x 143. Many woodworkers find this a little small so you can buy or build a larger auxiliary table to give you a greater work surface.

There is not a great deal of difference between an open and closed stand. Open stands are just as stable and in some cases more so, but they do allow your motor to be out in the open where dust can get into it. If you have an open stand make sure you blow the dust out of the motor on a regular basis. Closed stands keep the motor cleaner, but not totally dust free, plus they offer storage space for wrenches, hex keys, manual and accessories.

The blade on a band saw is held in place by either guide blocks or bearings. Bearings run cooler, smoother and quieter than blocks. The majority of saws have guide blocks but there are conversion kits available or blocks made out of resins, which run cooler and smoother than the steel factory ones supplied. If is worth using either option since you blades will last longer and the noise level will almost be cut in half.

Most machines these days have dust ports of some sort and they are important for the same reasons; cleaner air, safer shop environment, cleaner longer lasting machine.

If you are interested in doing a lot of resawing, look into an actual resaw band saw. Most band saws will go up to ¾" or 13 wide blades and although they can resaw the odd piece, they are not designed for continuous long-term use like this. Resaw band saws have a much more powerful motor and use blades about 33 wide, some are even carbide tipped. You need the wider blades to maintain a straight even cut throughout the entire depth of material. Try and determine how much resawing you will want to do. If a standard band saw will be okay, just do not push it too hard when cutting material 33 and thicker and use as wide a blade as possible.

Make sure the blade tension; tracking, height and table adjustments are all convenient, easy to use and secure. You do not want to be constantly adjusting and tuning the machine so make sure there are no obvious problems. Any sloppy connections or adjustments could mean problems in tracking or stability.

Just a quick work about two common accessories. If your band saw does not come with a lamp, it is a good idea to buy one or set something up. Because of how you normally stand at the saw, your shadow naturally falls right across the table and blade. This can be very annoying if you are trying to make intricate and precise cuts, so a lamp is worth it. The second is a circle cutting attachment. This is a pet peeve of mine. There are some on the market, but they usually have a very small capacity. They are fine if you are making toys or smaller projects but not for even a medium sized tabletop. This is one attachment, which is easy to make yourself. Some plywood for the top, a 2×2 or 2×4 for the leg support and some clamps and you are in business. You can make it as large as you need, providing lots of work support and you can cut small circles on it as well.

Band Saw Check List

-Size. 83 to 243 throat and 33 to 133 height capacity. Make sure it will have enough depth and height capacity to do what you want it to. You need to take into account space, capacity and what you want to cut. Band saw sizes can be advertised either by the diameter of the wheels or by the cutting capacity, so be careful when you compare.

-What is the frame made of and is it solid and stable.

-Motor - Check the horsepower and amps. You'll need both when comparing. For bench top saws get at least 1/4 HP, better 1/3HP and for general shop use, a floor model with 3/4HP, or even better 1HP.

-Check that the wheels are balanced. You can tell by looking for circular drill marks where material has been removed to equal the weight around the rim.

-Table should tilt to 45 degrees right and if it tilts to the left as well it is a bonus. What size mitre slot and what kind on mitre gauge.

-Does it have guide blocks or bearings and if blocks is there bearing kits or resin blocks to replace the original steel blocks.

-What size dust port does it have and does it match your system or do you need an adapter.

-Where is the power switch and is it easy to reach? Switches in awkward places can be a safety hazard.

-Where is it made and where do you get parts & service? There are some excellent offshore machines out there but you have to be careful because there are also some bad ones. Check the brand and the company you are buying from and find out exactly where you can get servicing done.

Good luck. You are the one paying for it and using it, so find out as much as you can before you make the purchase so you wont have any regrets. And remember, no loose clothing and no jewelry, wear short sleeves, safety glasses and hearing protection.

Band Saws - Vertical VS Portable

Choosing the Correct Band Saw for the Job

Saw Band

Band saws come in two primary styles - vertical and portable. In theory, they are similar - both types use a continuous blade in the form of a band which rotates around two wheels. However, as is often the case, practice differs from theory and in this case, fairly dramatically.

Saw Band

Vertical Band Saws

Vertical band saw are freestanding, although they may be set on a bench or have a stand on the floor. The blade travels vertically with the wheels arranged one over the other.

Vertical models can be used to cut wood or metal, depending on the blade installed.

In wood shops, these useful and hardworking tools can be used for resawing lumber - what I call scut work, or they can be used to cut intricate shapes - what I call decorative work, as well as everything in between. In terms of the process, because the saw is stationary, the operator is the one manipulating the material being cut through the running blade.

For decorative work, the degree of intricacy achieved will depend on the width of the blade itself (narrower will cut tighter curves), the nature of the material being cut - finer grained rather than loose, and the experience of the operator.

My personal experience with band saws comes from working in theater scene shops where the blades are generally set with wood cutting blades. In that kind of setting, band saws are generally used for decorative work and rarely for recutting lumber. In fact the myriad of materials cut with a wood blade run the gamut from wood to Styrofoam, ethafoam rod, and even objects such as books!

In a metal shop, a vertical model is likely to cut intricate patterns or possibly perform scut work such as cutting bundles of metal rods, or even lengths of conduit.

Again, because the saw itself is stationary, the material will be guided through the saw by the operator.

Portable Band Saws

A portable band saw is a hand held tool, wielded by an operator and generally used to cut stationary objects such as conduit. The operator is moving the saw itself rather than the material being cut. This is directly opposite how a vertical, stationary band saw is used.

Developed for use by contractors, these hardworking power tools are typically fitted with metal cutting blades and are used to cut conduit, steel stock, unistrut, threaded rod, and even concrete.

With the proper blade, a well equipped portable band saw is capable of cleaner and squarer cuts than a reciprocating saw. Again, with the right blade for the job, there will be fewer sparks and cleaner quieter cut. Because they are portable, time is saved since there is little to no set up time - the operator just moves the saw to where it is needed. Recently, cordless models are removing the limitations imposed by the necessity of running extension cords.

While coarse blades with fewer teeth will cut the fastest, they will also tend to rip and grab when cutting thin materials. As with most saws, choosing the correct blade is an important part of using the tool successfully.

A portable band saw is not one that you can pick up and use confidently, right out of the box. They are fairly heavy, weighing in between 13 and 20 pounds, depending on make and model. The key with successful cutting is to allow the weight of the saw to do most of the work, and not rush the cut.

Common Limitations of the Vertical and the Portable

Both types of band saws are limited by the width and depth of the throat. This limitation is called the cutting capacity and it restricts the actual size of the material that can be cut.

While there are similarities between the two types of saw, there are far more differences in HOW they are used and WHAT they are used for. They are definitely NOT interchangeable and it is important to educate yourself about which you may need for a particular job.

The Rockwell Band Saw is Quality Combined With Value in Power Saws

Low price is low quality. That is not true with the Rockwell band saw. Even if it has a very affordable price, the Rockwell saw is durable and performs reliably and accurately.

Saw Band

Low price is equal to low quality. In the advent of China-made products, that old business maxim never sounded so truthful. Just compare super affordable blue jeans that came out of a run-down factory in China to a rather expensive one produced by one of few remaining factories in the US. Which possesses finer cloth quality? Which retains its color longer? The question is almost a no-brainer: Blue jeans made in the US are just better quality.

Saw Band

Yet there are times when low-priced does not necessarily translates into low quality. There are exceptions to the rule, as the old saying goes. There are still manufacturers that produce high quality products at affordable rates. What is the secret to their low rates? Sweat-shop labor rates ranks as the obvious first thought, but it is not.

Almost two-third of the total cost of an expensive product from so-called big companies comes from expensive advertisements, such as NASCAR and other pro sports sponsorships, as well as rather exorbitant bonuses to company big wigs. The fact is that only about one-third of the total market cost is the actual price.

At Rockwell, the prevailing philosophy is keep things simple. They do not spend much on expensive ad campaigns over the TV and internet. Nor do they sponsor mega sporting events. And their bosses do not command sky-high bonuses. That is why they sell their products at such a low rate without compensating quality.

Thus it is definitely true that a Rockwell band saw is both low-priced and high-quality.

If you are a woodworking enthusiast or a metalworking fanatic, then maybe you should consider getting a Rockwell band saw for your workshop. Why choose a Rockwell saw aside from the low price? Two common reasons are that they are very reliable and durable.

One particular example is the Rockwell nine inch band saw. With a 2.5 amp motor, the Rockwell nine inch band saw is one of the most affordable bench-top band saws out in the market. It does not, however, mean that its performance is subpar compared to other band saws made by bigger saw makers.

The Rockwell nine inch band saw is made of tough materials, such as aluminum. Do not belittle the size of this bench-top saw, for it can definitely perform heavy-duty work from hours on end. And the great thing is that it has mechanisms that will ensure you to make accurate cuts over and over and over again.

That certainly is a big bonus when you are using a band saw. Whether you are a woodworker or a metalworker, one thing that you do not want to do is to make inaccurate cuts. It would be time consuming doing repeat cuts, so a band saw that would offer optimum precision would really provide a great help. And that is what Rockwell band saw can do in a daily basis.

In terms of durability, the Rockwell band saw ranks as one of the best. It is one of Rockwell's major commitments: making durable saws. And that is not just plain talk. Just search the internet and you will find an online auction site that sells vintage Rockwell 14 inch band saw that was made way back in the late 80s or early 70s.

Metal Cutting Band Saw Uses and Safety

Man has been in the business of making tools to make life easier for him and one of the tools that has been faithful to this mandate is a metal cutting band saw. If you are thinking of cutting metal and believe you only need to have a metal cutting band saw; maybe a horizontal band saw to achieve this feat, well you are okay up to the point of considering this band saw type, but there is more to reflect upon. Metals come in different shapes, sizes and density or should I say thickness so cutting them requires you have certain knowledge and skill set. This is important as attempting to cut any metal without knowing this could lead to fatal consequences.

Saw Band

Having said this, the things you ought to know when attempting to work on a metal are the features different types of metals possess and how these metals are cut, the accessories and equipment, which you will need to have to safely carry out this out this task. Having knowledge of the features of a metal you plan to work on is essential. If for instance, you want to use a friend's horizontal band saw; you need to know that this equipment usually uses different blades, which are made to work on different types of metals. A saw blade that has been made to work on aluminum will likely not do a nice job on any stainless steel. This is because of the hardness of stainless steel, which will need another kind of saw blade to carry out any task on it.

Saw Band

Another important concern that you should have is how you wish to work on the metals, what cuts do you like to make on these metals? This is essential as you should know what type of metal cutting band saw machine is needed to cut the metal you want to work on. Horizontal band saw for example is primarily used in straight-line sawing. A safety measure that you should have before trying any cut on a metal is making sure you use the band saw's vice in order to hold the metal in place, while you are working on it. To neglect this, could lead to serious consequences.

If the vice is faulty ensure you replace it or carry out a repair where this is possible as this could mean preventing a major injury from happening. The reason for using a vice while working with metal is because of the resistance that is experienced as metal meets with metal when using a metal cutting band saw. This makes the metal to glide over the saw and accidents do happen, if you know what I mean. You should also make sure you put on safety glasses for your eyes to protect them from metal fragments and wear leather gloves.

Metal Cutting Band Saw Uses and Safety
Saw Band

Horizontal Band Saw

A horizontal band saw is usually used for cutting large pieces of wood or metal.  It works differently than the standard vertical band saw: instead of moving your workpiece into the blade, the reverse is true: You typically clamp the work piece in place and then the blade descends through the workpiece as it is cut.  Usually the blade is simply anchored on one side and is driven downwards through your piece by gravity!  In the case of a metal horizontal band saw, it will usually have a sprayer and pump to make sure that the workpiece is covered in a cutting fluid which is recirculated throughout the saw

Saw Band

Without this cutting fluid, the piece can overhead and cutting it will be much less efficient.  Like all bandsaws, this saw uses a continuous circle of metal with a blade or grinding agent on one of the edges.  This circular blade is spun quickly by an electrical motor in order to efficiently cut through wood or metal.  This is a foundational tool in many workshops. Keep in mind that they are generally used for cutting stock generally down to size and that precise finishing cuts are made on more precise equipment.

Saw Band

When buying your own saw, you can find one new or look around to find one used.  When buying one pre-owned, it's a good idea to buy one in good running condition so that you don't need to put more money into maintenance.  When buying it, be sure to watch it run and understand any quirks it may have from the current owner.  If they have any extra blades, try to get these thrown in for free as they are expensive to buy and this can make the used deal even better for you.

What is the Difference Between a Band Saw and a Scroll Saw?

The structural differences between a scroll saw and a band saw are not so difficult to detect as the differences between their uses. Most of us know that both saws are used for detailed curved cutting, but what their real differences are, to many of us, is more mystery than fact. Beginning on the surface of each saw, we can zero in on the features that make each saw unique and a champion of its own niche.

Saw Band

The band saw is bigger than its scroll sawing counterpart, and although we know they both specialize in curved cuts, their blade designs are much different. A band saw blade, as the name implies, is a large band or continuous loop, a thin oblong blade that fits and rotates around two wheels that spin in the same direction. Similar to a pulley system or the belt systems that exist in your other power tools, the blade rotates or spins in that continuous loop. This design results in superior cutting uniformity which renders the band saw equally effective when cutting both wood, metal, and a variety of other industrial materials as well. On another hand, the scroll saw works more similarly to a seriously juiced up jigsaw; its blade is short and straight (like a jig saw or coping saw blade) and cuts with an accelerated up and down reciprocating action. The scroll saw is effective in the same variety of materials as the band saw, only it cuts with less intensity.

Saw Band

The band saw is perhaps most commonly used for cutting curves and shapes into workpieces. This fine detail work, though, because of the band saw's blade design, can only be performed on the outside edges of a workpiece. This minor limitation, however, does not dissuade many woodworkers as the band saw is a quite universal cutting tool. A band saw can produce surprisingly straight cuts and is used in many woodshops as a resawing machine. Resawing is a technique used to create smaller sections of timber from larger sections of timber by entirely cutting or sectioning a piece of wood or log along its grain. This technique is universally useful, allows you to create new pieces of workable material, and is perhaps where the band saw performs most brilliantly.

Although detailed cuts are among the band saw's strong suits, the scroll makes these detailed curved cuts with surpassing precision. Unlike the band saw, though, a scroll saw has the ability to cut intricate shapes on the inside of a workpiece. In other words, a band saw can cut shapes and a scroll can cut shapes and then cut more shapes inside those shapes. The band saw is strictly a perimeter cutter whereas, by pre-drilling a small hole into a workpiece and fitting the scroll saw blade into said pre-drilled hole, the scroll saw can perform detailed interior cuts as well. This is especially helpful to our most crafty and creative woodworkers.

For all intensive purposes, and with every respect to the band saw, the scroll saw is vastly more effective at detailed craft work. The machine is acutely accurate and allows for huge amounts of creativity in a relatively small package. Not only is the scroll saw's agility during intricate curves and patterns virtually unparalleled, but the tool can also create smooth dovetail joints rendering this machine a true paradise for small scale, intricate craft projects. Similarly, the band saw most certainly takes the cake in universal effectiveness and can cut a straight line with greater ease and accuracy than a scroll saw any day of the week.

In the end, although the scroll saw and the band saw can be used to perform many of the same applications, their subtle differences may make all the difference. A band saw is a champion of curved cutting, but its truest calling comes in the form of resawing and stacked cutting. The scroll saw, on another hand, is, although less universally useful than the band saw, an ethereally good detail worker and can perform detailed cuts inside the perimeter of a workpiece. Each have their own specialized actions and each is an equally valid, equally awesome cutting machine.

Metal Cutting Band Saw

One of the foundational tools of any real metal shop is a metal cutting band saw. This can be used for cutting large pieces down to size and even for some more precise jobs. It works by using a saw blade that is continuous circle with a blade or cutting surface on one side. It is spun at high speeds in order to grind through the metal. It's usually important to wear eye protection and use cutting fluid in order to maximize efficiency and safety will cutting metal. Some saws may require that you push the workpiece through the blade, while others have a gravity driven blade that cuts through a workpiece that has been clamped down.

Saw Band

Either way, this is a very efficient means of cutting through large quantities of metal with minimal manual work by hand. Once you have a metal cutting band saw, you can investigate buying more special use and esoteric tools for doing more precise and less common jobs now that you can cut your stock down to size.

Saw Band

It's important to remember that while a band saw for wood cuts through the material with teeth and blades, a band saw for metal actually grinds through the metal with some sort of abrasive which is usually silicon carbide or even diamond in some cases. In order to avoid breaking the relatively delicate blade, it's important to recognize when the blade tension is too high, and when you are putting too much pressure on or twisting the metal blade too much. The replacement band saw blades are not cheap!

A Band Saw Buying Guide- 6 Considerations That Save Woodworkers Money

So. You've decided that your wood shop needs a band saw. Its use in resawing, scroll work and joinery are arguably unparalleled, so congratulations on your decision! Your duty to yourself as a consumer is education. This guide seeks to give you all the important information you need so that you can make the band saw decision that's right for you.

Saw Band

1) The All Important Application Analysis

Saw Band

First of all you need to have a clear understanding for yourself of how you'll be using your band saw.

Will you be doing lots of resawing? You need higher horsepower and a wider blade width capacity among other things.

How about scroll work? Horsepower doesn't matter quite as much here (unless you're working with thick stock) as allowance for a narrower blade.

Will you be using your band saw five times a week or five times an hour? This will give you an idea of how much you need to spend on the motor and whether you need a bench top or floor model.

Once you've answered the application questions for yourself you can begin to dig a little deeper into other aspects of a band saw.

2) Bench Top vs. Floor Model

As a very general rule, bench top models belong in non-professional wood shops.

Power hobbyists - those woodworkers who spend every waking minute in the wood shop - will point to the floor model band saw in their shop and disagree heartily.

Your bench top band saws are made to literally sit on your bench top or to be bolted onto a stand. They are compact and portable and ideal for light scroll cutting.

Floor models are more stable and more powerful and ideal for heavy rip sawing and decorative work on thick stock wood. Their higher horsepower typically keeps the blade from getting stuck and burning the wood you're cutting.

3) Throat Capacity

Another reason it's important that you know your desired application is throat capacity - that's the distance between the blade and the frame and it determines the maximum width of the saw's ability to cut.

The greater the throat capacity the wider your cuts and larger pieces for scrolling.

4) Blade Width

It's typical that band saws accept the narrower 1/8" blades for creating scroll work. If resawing is important to you then you've got to make sure you're getting a saw that accepts wider blades, as they flex less and enable more accurate, faster cuts through thicker stock.

If you're buying your band saw to make scroll cuts only then the acceptance of a wider blade should not be a consideration... then again in a few months you might be looking for new ways to resaw your lumber. Again, that's why the initial Application Analysis is so important.

A note on blades: TPI stands for "teeth per inch." A higher teeth per inch ratio means that blades will cut more slowly, but more cleanly. That's right - making them ideal for scroll work. A lower TPI means that blades will cut more quickly but leave more of a mark, suiting them for ripping.

5) The Possibility for Expansion through Accessories

There are a number of potential accessories for every band saw. Some more than others though. When you know your applications you'll have a better idea of which accessories you're going to need and which you don't need to allow for in your model of choice.

That said, it's a good idea to err on the side of MORE possible accessories than fewer.

Some accessories include circle cutting attachments for cutting perfect circles, tilting tables for beveled cuts, miter gauges, rip fences and even height extenders for cutting thicker wood.

6) Band Saw vs. a Jig Saw

The main functional difference between the two types of saws are that the band saws have blades that cut in one continuous loop, while jig saws go up and down.

It's generally held that the band saw is the superior saw due to the vibration of the up and down motion of the jig saw. Since the band saw blade only pulls in one direction there's no chance of upward thrust on the piece that could throw the cut out of true.

That said, the ability to change blades and even the extreme narrowness of some jig saw blades makes this question moot for certain types of highly delicate work.

7) Wrapping it up...

As with any woodworking tool purchase you're more likely to make a sound decision if you know exactly how you'll be using it ahead of time. Having a good idea of how your projects for the next several months will help ensure that you're getting the right tool for the job.
