First a Trickle again a Flood - The Birth of the Blues in Britain

Chris Barber's Jazz Band with the beautiful Otillie Patterson on vocals brought the sound of New Orleans to British traditional Jazz buffs in the late fifties and early sixties. This was just the beginning of a wave of new sounds that culminated in what came to be known as the British Blues Boom! On Banjo was the great Lonnie Donegan who became the Godfather of Skiffle a year or two later. All of the early musical melting pots were springboards for the next generation of musicians and within a couple of years the Music scene was to change forever.

Saw Band

My first exposure to the blues was on Barber's wonderful L.P. New Orleans Joys. I forget all the titles now but the haunting sounds stirred up strange sensations and led me a few years later to a life long passion for the Blues as I am sure it did with many young kids at the time.

Saw Band

The year 1962 saw the birth of several Blues gigs in London Clubs, notably the Famous Marquee which made its home in Wardour Street, Soho. The great Alexis Korner was to prove to be a nursery slope for what was to come. Cyril Davies on Harp, Dick Heckstall- Smith on the most wailing of saxophones, Mick Jagger (yes that one!) on vocals to name but a few. I guess that first Album recorded live at the Marquee...Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, started the trickle which very rapidly gathered momentum and soon the Blues was the talking point of all young music heads.

Playing at the Marquee shortly after, in 1963 was the man destined to become the Godfather of British Blues... John Mayall.... John's famous band, The BluesBreakers went onto fame and fortune as many musicians joined and left in quite a procession over the next couple of years. John celebrated his 70th Birthday a couple of years ago and is playing as well as ever. This gives lie to the notion that life is over at forty and its all downhill from there on. The list of John's protégées is a who's who of the music business; a good proportion of whom are still playing today. John McVie, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce of Cream, Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, Peter Green, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Taylor and many more.

The band that I believe was the turning point at this time was undoubtedly The Yardbirds, whose incredible energy and enthusiasm were absolutely unparalleled on stage. My first exposure to this Juggernaut was on a Monday morning at school one time when some friends told me about this amazing band that they had seen at the Marquee who had a Guitarist that was simply unbelievable. The Year was 1963, the man in question (well he was only 18 years old!) was Eric Clapton.

The Legend was already underway at this stage and I believe Eric was responsible for the huge interest brewing in the Blues in Britain as the Yardbirds became household names on the R n' B circuit. Many Guitars were sold at this time as young bloods attempted to emulate Clapton, some with success and many without. Probably one reason for the upsurge in Guitar bands as opposed to wishy washy pop sounds of the time was the discovery of the almost forgotten Gibson Les Paul which produced the sound closest to the Chicago Blues of a decade earlier. Eric's use of this instrument took the Blues to a new height and no-one could escape the flood that was on the way. With the Yardbirds there was a mix of Gibson and Fender guitars in use. Eric initially played a Fender Telecaster with Rhythm Guitarist Chris Dreja using the Gibson 335, but the favourite in years to come particularly in '65 and '66 was the Les Paul.

In 1963 one of the first Bluesmen to arrive on this side of the Atlantic for a Tour was the legendary Harp player Sonny Boy Williamson who recorded a wonderful live album with the Yardbirds that was not released for several years. The restrained backing that the band provided to Sonny Boy showed them to be tight and controlled but Keith Relf the Lead singer and Harpist was a little put out at having to take a back seat to the Master during the gig. Many more Blues legends toured Britain and Europe in the following years which not only revitalised their own flagging careers but gave the budding white Blues players a chance to learn from the Maestros. These include Howling Wolf and the legendary Son House who had been a contemporary of Robert Johnson in the nineteen thirties. The author was privileged to see Son House play in London in 1970 shortly before he died. He was very frail but he certainly could make that National Steel Guitar sing sweetly!

The Album that preceded the Flood was of course the 1966 rendition by John Mayall entitled simply "John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton" recorded on the Decca label .This album marked the first vocal airing by Slowhand and he chose Robert Johnson's "Rambling on my Mind" as his debut. The interrelating of Mayall's gutsy Barrelhouse Piano together with Eric's Les Paul and his tentative vocals, wrote a piece of Blues History that day in the studio. That Album sums up for me not only the musicianship involved and the passion of the music but the very essence of the British interpretation of the Blues. I have listened to this song so many times now since the first momentous day that it came through the speakers and every time it's hard to keep the emotions steady.

The Robert Johnson Legacy forms an integral and vital part of the Birth of the Blues in Britain and is responsible for the undoubted vitality of today's thriving Blues scene on both sides of the Atlantic. There are no Blues Bands past or present who do not owe a debt to Robert Leroy and his magic. His genius and virtuosity with the bottleneck will live forever!

Saw Band

He auditioned for the reality show America's Got Talent on June 8 at new York singing Largo al Factotum and qualified to participate in the show.

The stage name of Prince Poppycock was adorned in the year 2006, so that he can be able to perform in a nightclub show in Los Angeles. He further boosted his stage name by wearing a mask, which he named Poppycock. He uses the traits or irony, humor and sarcasm to capture the attention of his audience. He was at one time referred to as 'male' Lady Gaga due to his mask and costumes.

On August 24, during the semifinals in round one, Poppycock performed a song by a British rock band. The song 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' was originally done by Freddie Mercury, but this acclaimed singer modified it to suit the event. The song that contained no chorus was well received by the judges and other viewers who noted that it was a star performance. On 7 September, Poppycock performed several songs that saw him get a slot as one of the top 10 contestants of this show. He performed songs like star bungled banner, which was originally composed by Francis Scott, Yankee Doodle Boy, by George Cohan and Gem Of The Ocean by Thomas Becklet, which had an excerpt from the USA declaration of independence. On September 14, Poppycock performed 'Nessun Dorma' that means 'None Shall sleep', originally composed by Giacomo Puccini. He was voted the fourth contestant in the whole competition.

Grace Slick - Five Surprising Facts About a Sixties Rock Star

Grace Slick will forever be known as the focal point of the iconic sixties rock band Jefferson Airplane. As a songwriter, a singer, and a sex symbol, Grace set herself apart from the female singer/songwriters of the hippie era by the force of her personality and her authenticity as a full fledged member of a premiere rock band.

Saw Band

Grace Slick was born Grace Barnett Wing, October 30, 1939. According to the FBI, Grace was born in Highland Park, Illinois, although Grace Slick tells people she was born in Chicago.

Saw Band

In the early 1950s Grace's family moved from Illinois to California, where she attended middle school and high school. Grace attended Finch College in New York and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, in the late 1950s and even did a little modeling in the early 1960s.

In 1965 Grace and her first husband, Jerry Slick, saw the newly formed Jefferson Airplane perform at The Matrix. Realizing that she could make much more money and have a lot more fun in a rock band, Grace decided to give up modeling and start a music career. Grace, Jerry Slick, his brother, Darby Slick and other friends formed their own band, The Great Society. The group debuted during the autumn of 1965 with Grace providing vocals, guitar, piano, and the recorder. She and her brother-in-law wrote a majority of the songs. By early 1966 The Great Society was one of the popular psychedelic acts in the Bay area.

Jefferson Airplane

In 1966, Jefferson Airplane asked Grace Slick to replace their lead singer Signe Toly Anderson. It didn't take Grace long to become firmly established as a full fledged member of the band, an equal among equals. Soon after Grace joined Airplane, the band began recording an album which included two The Great Society tunes: "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love". By 1967, Surrealistic Pillow and its singles were great successes and Jefferson Airplane was one of the best-known bands in the country.

From 1966 to 1971 Grace Slick wrote several memorable songs: "White Rabbit", "Rejoyce", "Greasy Heart", "Eskimo Blue Day", and "Lather." She became the face of the 1960s counter culture and became notorious for her outrageous, reckless, and violent behavior, usually fueled by alcohol.

By early 1971 Jefferson Airplane was over. Grace Slick retired from the music business in 1989. Currently Grace spends her time as a celebrity artist, selling and exhibiting her drawings and paintings.

Conclusion

From 1966 to 1971, Jefferson Airplane contributed to the soundtrack of the social and cultural revolution that affected America profoundly and spread throughout the world. Grace Slick, as a singer, song writer, musician and collaborator in that band has earned a unique place as a star of the 1960s Cultural Revolution. The song "White Rabbit", written by Grace Slick, became an anthem for those seeking altered states of consciousness. The 1970s and 1980s saw Jefferson Airplane transform to Jefferson Starship and then to Starship--a transformation that is illustrative of what happened to rock music and the youth culture as commercialization overtook the music and middle age overtook those rock stars who managed to survive the psychedelic sixties.

Grace Slick was an important figure in the 1960s psychedelic rock genre, and is known for her witty lyrics and powerful contralto vocals. Slick's legacy as a trail blazing rock star remains to this day. She paved the way for countless female vocalists, writers and performers seeking to emulate her unique style.

Five Facts About Grace Slick

Grace Slick is purported to have written "White Rabbit" in an hour. Grace is the vocalist for some of Sesame Street's often played musical shorts, Jazzy Spies, which featured a frenetic musical background while a singer repeatedly intoned the particular numeral being highlighted. Her then-husband, Jerry Slick, actually produced those segments. After giving birth to her only child, China Kantner, Grace gave birth to an urban legend when she sarcastically told a nurse that she intended to name the child "god". The nurse took Grace seriously, not understanding it was a joke. Grace was married and divorced twice. Her first husband was Gerald "Jerry" Slick. Although Paul Kantner and Grace Slick had a serious relationship from 1969 to 1974 and have a daughter, they were never legally married. Grace married Skip Johnson in 1976, they divorced in 1994. Grace Slick was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 (as a member of Jefferson Airplane).

The Mambo - The Cuban Rhythm That Makes Feet Dance

The mambo is a Cuban genre of music and dance that combines traditional Cuban music with the highly Americanized forms of swing and big band.

Saw Band

It's a very syncopated type of music, a style that finds its footing in rhythm as opposed to melody (though melody, of course, plays its role). It is always played in 4/4 time and uses an amalgamation of American big band instruments and those found in traditional Latin styles; mambo bands will typically have a horn section in a addition to the very percussive bongos, timbales and congas.

Saw Band

Though it is a decidedly Cuban style, it's roots are far more European than Latin. The very first mambo was based heavily on English and French ballroom dancing music, and it was rarely intended for dancing. Though it certainly carried an inherent dance ability, early mambo was music for the sake of music; no dance had been assigned to it, nor did it seem like one would be.

The early version of it thrived as a piece of music alone until the 1940s when Damaso Perez Prado, a Cuban bandleader, began specializing in the form. His version brought people to their feet and led to the famous mambo dance's creation. Prado is also credited with bringing mambo music and it's accompanying dance to the United States, though the form sustained a bit of a shift as a result of the cultural change. Prado altered the mambo to make it slightly more commercial, more ready for 1950s American consumption, and watched the form become an almost instant craze. Prado's role in composing and popularizing the form earned him the title "Mambo King."

Typical instruments used in this style are the conga drum, the bongo, timbales, claves, and a mixture of band instruments including the trumpet, trombone, saxaphone, bass (usually upright bass, but sometimes an electric bass) and the piano. It is this mixture of Cuban rhythmic instruments and instruments used in big band jazz that gives the mambo it's distinctive sound.

Some typical songs include "Papa Loves Mambo", "I Saw Mommy Do The Mambo", "Mambo Italiano" and "They Were Doin' The Mambo".

Rhythmically it is similar to, but not identical to, other Latin-American rhythms such as the samba, tango, bossa nova, beguine, and others, but is unique enough to be instantly identifiable as such.

But like most instant crazes, it faded out of American popularity nearly as quickly as it arrived. Though the form is still heard and danced today, it morphed into a variety of different styles, including the pachanga, a similar dance that also faded quickly. It recently saw a resurgence of popularity in the late 1990s with a rock and roll based mambo revival, but that too was extremely short-lived.

How to Carve Fishing Lures

Most people when they decide to get into learning how to make fishing lures at home have done so because of the wonder that is a crankbait. I know I marveled over the contents of my tackle box many times wondering at how those wooden fishing lures were made. I remember trying my hand at it when I was a boy with no help from anyone just plain trial and error in trying to figure out the lost art of tackle making.

I remember trying my hand at it when I was a boy with no help from anyone just plain trial and error in trying to figure out the lost art of tackle making.

Saw Band

Learning how to carve fishing lures is something that isn't difficult to learn and here's a few tips to help you so that your first wooden fishing lures turn out as professional looking as the main brand name crankbaits.

Most wooden fishing lures are made of Balsa or Basswood, but that's not to say you can't make a really fine looking crankbait out of such woods as white and red cedar and others. In fact it was only about 30-40 years ago that a lot of top quality wooden lures were made from these woods. So if you don't have access to Balsa or Basswood then give white or red cedar a try, I'm sure you will like the results.

I like to use my scroll saw for the rough in of the crankbait before I get into the carving and shaping out the details. Now using a scroll saw may take a little more finesse then a small band saw, so if you have a bandsaw then use that, I don't so I use my trusty scroll saw. The trick is to draw on the wooden blank the lures profile both side and top profiles so that when you cut the rough shape out with either your band saw or scroll saw you have a real blocky looking crankbait.

From this stage how to carve fishing lures can take a couple different directions. Some like to hand carve out the rough shape into something more refined, others like to use wood rasps and the like to achieve the same thing. For me it depends on my wood choice if I'm using the easier to carve woods like Balsa and basswood, I'll whip out my swiss army knife and whittle out my block rough crankbait into a more refined shape. If I'm using cedar then I might use a combination of rasps and knife work in my tackle making process. Either way the idea is to round off the edges and start to bring the crankbait alive.

Once the shape is basically formed then it's time for sanding. A lot about wooden fishing lures and learning how to make fishing lures at home depends a lot on your skills at fine sanding. Once sanded and shaped then it's time for sealing the wood and painting and finishing the crankbait. The topic of how to carve fishing lures really is beyond the scope of this article and the person wishing to get into tackle making should look up some more material on websites and books to learn more but hopefully these few tips will give you some ideas.
